Overcoming the COVID-19 Pandemic: We’re All in this Together

Like it or not, we’re in the middle of a pandemic that’s spreading through the population at a blazing-fast speed. It doesn’t care who you are, what you believe in or what you stand for: the virus is indiscriminate. To stand against it, we need to show the same type of resolve—unity as a country. When the American people come together to fight against a common adversary, history tells us there’s nothing we can’t surmount.

So, how do we come together while keeping safe during this time of social distancing? There are many ways to lend a hand and help make this pandemic a thing of the past—sooner rather than later. Here are some of the best ways to do your part.

Follow executive orders and community guidelines

No matter where you’re located in the United States, it’s important to work together as a nation to flatten the curve. Some states have strict executive orders handed down from their respective governors to stay at home, while other communities are simply encouraging social distancing to make it less likely for community members to get the coronavirus.

As a country, we need to pay attention to local officials, abide by the rules and guidelines in place, and do all that we can to eliminate this fast-spreading illness. Abide by executive orders—they’re meant to safeguard your health and the health of those around you.

Help local organizations and health professionals

Since many of us are in our homes 24/7 these days, it’s a good time to check out the needs of local organizations and health professionals to see what we can do to help. Go online, to community websites and social media pages, to see if there’s a way to help out from your home. Whether it’s donating to a local charity in need or making masks for healthcare workers, there is sure to be a cause that needs assistance in your local area.

We can embrace the American spirit of helping one another, especially during this concerning time. We just need to do it from a distance.

Embrace others through technology

Social distancing makes it hard to provide support to people in-person. Thankfully, technology has made it easier than ever to be a positive force in someone else’s life. Send someone a text or an email to tell them you’re thinking about them and hope they’re well. Or, hop on a Skype call to see others face-to-face. Social media also provides an excellent way to stay informed and provide hope for those who might be scared or anxious—and it’s easy to send a reassuring message to someone.

Social interaction is extremely important these days. Since we can’t do it in person, we have to choose the next best thing: technology. After all, we’re all in this together and it’s good to know we’re not alone!

Come Together in Tragedy and Times of Anxiety

The pandemic has caused no small amount of turmoil for everyone. From feelings of anxiety to unthinkable grief, we’re all affected—and we all need support. It’s up to each and every person to be there for someone else, and know that someone is there for them.

In the midst of all of this tragedy, we need to observe the kindness of humanity and concern for others that’s popping up on a daily basis.

Community members are checking in on their neighbors by phone, email and text, while others are making masks for their local healthcare workers or donating food to area first responders. In the midst of struggle and tragedy, kindness and love are prevailing.

Here’s how you can contribute to this growing wave of positivity that’s beating back the pandemic’s woes.

Lend a hand to help others

The coronavirus pandemic presents a unique opportunity for us to act with altruism. Many people need a helping hand at this time and, if you’re in a position to help, even a little bit goes a long way in changing someone’s life for the better—if even for a day.

  • Make masks for medical professionals, first responders and at-risk individuals
  • Donate food or make a monetary donation to a local food bank
  • Shop for elderly individuals or those with compromised immune systems
  • Check in on others virtually, including family, friends, coworkers and neighbors

Reach out and listen

Sometimes, all a person needs to feel better is the ability to unburden themselves. If you know someone who’s struggling, lend them your ear. A phone call or Zoom call is a great way to let them open up and unload everything that’s weighing on them. You don’t need to try and solve their problems—you just need to listen. They’re sure to feel better afterward, and appreciate the time you took to be there for them.

Stay in contact with friends and loved ones

In addition to reaching out to those who need to vent, it's also important to reach out to friends and family members to let them know you’re thinking of them. Even a simple text message that says “I hope you have a great day” or “I’m thinking of you” is a simple way to give someone the energy and confidence they need to get through the day. It’s a simple sentiment that goes a long way.

Think about the post-pandemic recovery

It’s never too early to start thinking of ways to help your friends, family and community post-pandemic. The pandemic will end. When it does, the rebuilding begins. Think of ways you can contribute. Some great opportunities to consider include:

  • Shopping local, to support small businesses
  • Volunteering your time to help those still suffering
  • Doing good deeds for those in your immediate circle
  • Donating money to local organizations helping to rebuild

We Will Get Through This

The United States has faced tragedies in the past, and will surely face more struggles in the future. The pandemic is especially difficult because we’re standing strong against something unseen. And while it might feel like there’s no hope and that the pandemic is the new norm, remember that nothing can stand against us when we all stand together.

As you watch the daily news and wonder what the next day will bring, just remember: this is a moment in time. We will get through this! It’s okay to experience feelings of anxiousness. Just know that you’re not alone, and there are ways to push through these days. Do so with hope, faith and the knowledge that social distancing efforts are working to lessen the spread of the coronavirus. Every new day is a step towards getting things up and running once again.
