Here are some of the can’t-miss patriotic monuments and sites to visit, all across the country. Remember, these are just a few of our favorites—the country is brimming with other patriotic destinations!

9/11 Memorial and Museum

The National 9/11 Memorial and Museum stands in remembrance of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. It also serves as a reminder to never forget the brave first responders who gave their lives to help others and honor their memory. This solemn, moving, patriotic site in New York City is one American landmark every person should visit, given the opportunity. 

Fort McHenry

Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland, is what inspired Francis Scott Key to create our beloved patriotic national anthem: "The Star-Spangled Banner." At this historical site, visitors can stop at the visitor center to view a short film about the history surrounding Fort McHenry and take a self-guided tour of the location. In addition to the history, it’s a truly inspiring site to explore!

Freedom Trail

Enjoy stretching your legs on a good hike? Explore the Freedom Trail: 16 nationally significant historic sites along a 2.5 mile stretch through Boston, Massachusetts. Walk along and view extraordinary sites spanning 250+ years of history, including Boston Commons, Park Street Church, Old State House, the Paul Revere House and Faneuil Hall, to name a few.

Gettysburg National Military Park

Gettysburg National Military Park is the site where the Battle of Gettysburg took place in July, 1863. During your visit to this somber site in American history, you’ll learn about the Battle of Gettysburg at the visitor center, then tour the vast grounds of the park and view special sites and monuments along the way. It’s a site that’s equal parts breathtaking and sobering.

Independence Hall

If your road trip takes you into Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, you’ll be in the very heart of American history. A must-visit destination in the city is Independence Hall. Walk around the exterior of this historic building and get a closer look at the place where the signing of the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution took place. After that, we definitely recommend a visit to the Liberty Bell!

Independence National Historical Park

The Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a combination of many historical sites in one. Some of the historical spots you'll have the opportunity to explore include the Liberty Bell and the Benjamin Franklin Museum—as well as Independence Hall, mentioned above. Visiting all of these patriotic monuments is an educational and fun time for all.

Lincoln Memorial

One of the most powerful historic spots to visit in Washington, DC, is the Lincoln Memorial. The statue of President Abraham Lincoln sits in a partially enclosed area at the top of an impressive set of stairs. In addition to seeing the statue, you can also read the famous speeches of President Lincoln, inscribed on the walls of the monument.

Minute Man National Historic Park

For those visiting the Boston area, Minute Man National Historic Park in Concord, Massachusetts, is a great outdoor excursion for families. Walk through this national park and learn about the place where the Revolutionary War began. You’ll gain insightful information about the first battle for independence, which took place on April 19, 1775.

Mount Rushmore

Located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, Mount Rushmore a wonderful outdoor historic site for the whole family. Mount Rushmore is a mountainside monument that features the faces of four iconic U.S. presidents: George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln. The carvings began in 1927 and were fully completed in 1941.

Saratoga National Historical Park

Another historic site in New York State is Saratoga National Historical Park. This national park in Stillwater provides visitors with a glimpse into this battlefield location. This is the historic spot where troops stopped the British in 1777 during the Revolutionary War. It’s an experience that’s equal parts ethereal and educational—one of the most important sites in our history.

Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty in New York City, New York, is known around the world as a United States landmark, signifying freedom and democracy. Dedicated on October 28, 1886 and designated as a national monument in 1924, the Statue of Liberty draws visitors from across the country who want to view this beautiful and historically significant statue in person.

The U.S. Capitol

The U.S. Capitol is another patriotic monument to add to your must-visit list in Washington, D.C. Visit the 580,000 square-foot visitor center to learn more about this historic building and what happens inside its walls. For a more in-depth look, you can even schedule a tour of the U.S. Capitol Building and see where the nation's laws are set into motion.

Valley Forge National Historical Park

Located just outside King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, Valley Forge National Historical Park is the site of the Continental Army’s winter encampment from 1777-1778. At the park, you can tour the outdoor scenery, learn about this time in history and explore the monuments. Follow a tour guide through the park or embark on a self-guided tour: the choice is yours!

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. honors the more than 58,000 Americans who gave their lives while fighting for our country. Walk along the path in front of this patriotic memorial and pay your respects to those who died fighting in the Vietnam War. The wall is open 24 hours a day and there is no admission charge to view it. 

Washington’s Headquarters

As the first public historic site in the nation, Washington’s Headquarters in Newburgh draws a large crowd. At Washington’s Headquarters, visitors can learn about the place where the General spent much of his time during the American Revolution. It’s one of the best sites to visit for those who want to enthusiastically learn about the earliest days of our nation’s formation.

Washington Monument

The Washington Monument is a can’t-miss focal point in Washington, D.C. Standing 555 feet, 5 inches tall, this beautiful monument is a sight to behold. Whether you visit the Washington Monument during the daytime or view its glowing beauty at night, this patriotic vision is as stunning up-close as it is from afar. While you’re there, take time to explore the National Mall.

World War II Memorial

In 2004, the World War II Memorial was dedicated to 400,000+ American military members who gave their lives in battle. Stroll by the World War II Memorial to pay your respects and take in the awe-inspiring atmosphere that surrounds it. You may even want to see the memorial at night, when lovely lights shine up on this important Washington, DC, patriotic site.
