Celebrate Flag Day With These Patriotic Suggestions

In 1777, a Flag Resolution created the American flag we recognize today, with alternating red and white stripes and stars representing our individual states. Flag Day has been an American holiday for more than 100 years, established by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 to honor this symbol of America.

Flag Day occurs each June 14th—it’s a time to reflect on the freedom we have and the many things that make this country great. Want to celebrate Flag Day in a unique way? Here are just some of the ways you can show your appreciation for the stars and stripes:

1. Throw a Red, White, and Blue BBQ Party

This is one of the most obvious Flag Day celebration suggestions since this holiday is on June 14. This is prime BBQ season after all! Make sure the party has lots of red, white, and blue décor, as well as plenty of flags. You can even create a flag-themed menu that includes cupcakes decorated in the colors of the flag, fizzy drinks with red and blue fruits frozen inside the ice cubes, or a festive Jell-O dessert in these famous colors. Make it a fun annual event and invite a bunch of friends or neighbors over to celebrate Flag Day with a feast.

2. Learn About the Flag

A great way to honor the flag is to learn more about it with the family. If you have kids or teens in your life, this holiday is a great chance to teach them something new about the flag. Whether you teach them about who originally designed it, how the design has changed over time, or the basics of flag etiquette, there is so much to learn on this topic! You can even make a game out of it by having your own family flag trivia night.

3. Put up Your Own Flagpole

One of the most patriotic and lasting Flag Day celebration suggestions is to honor this symbol into your own hands. If you don't have the red, white, and blue flying outside your home, this is the perfect day to change that. You can install a flagpole for your yard or even a porch flag pole for smaller displays, but either way, this is a great way to celebrate this holiday on June 14th and the whole year!

4. Fly the Flag the Right Way

If you’ve chosen to install a flagpole at home, make sure you’re flying the flag the right way—at all times. Unless you’ve bought an all-weather flag, don’t fly the flag in inclement weather. Also be sure to illuminate the flag whenever you’re flying it at night. Keep in mind that there are several days throughout the year where the flag should be flown at half-staff. They include:

  • May 15: Peace Officers Memorial Day
  • Last Monday in May: Memorial Day (half-staff until noon only, then raised high)
  • July 27: Korean War Veterans Armistice Day
  • September 11: Patriot Day
  • December 7: Pearl Harbor Day

5. Do Some Flag-Related Crafts with the Kids

If you have little ones, doing some Flag Day crafts instills in them the importance of the holiday while providing a fun family activity. Whether you make a flag windsock or paint a flag on poster board using handprints, there are a ton of fun crafts out there you can do together on this important holiday.

6. Wear Patriotic Clothing

Even something as simple as wearing patriotic clothing can show your love for our flag and our country. Put on your favorite red, white and blue t-shirt, hat, bandana, or any other article of patriotic clothing next June 14th and wear your patriotism with pride.
