Inspire Yourself with Happy 4th of July Quotes

The 4th of July is a time to celebrate our country and all the accomplishments we’ve made. What better way to gain inspiration than by listening to and reflecting on the words of the past?

One of the greatest things about the American ideal of freedom and justice for all is that it’s inspired people the whole world over to think differently about what freedom means to them. Famous writers, world leaders and historical figures have all reflected on freedom and liberty—let their wisdom inspire you this 4th of July! Check out happy 4th of July quotes from these renowned individuals.

George Bernard Shaw

One of the words most commonly associated with the 4th of July is “liberty.” Liberty means being free from restrictions that dictate the way one lives and believes. Freedom is what the founding fathers strove for when leaving England. Famous Irish playwright and activist George Bernard Shaw called liberty “the breath of life to nations,” which is a sentiment that’s sure to resonate with many people on this day of celebration.

Bob Marley

While the Independence Day is meant to be a celebration of American independence from colonial rule, many of us take time out to also celebrate the brave men and women who have fought to secure our freedoms. Jamaican singer and songwriter Bob Marley spoke about the price of freedom, saying, “Better to die fighting for freedom than be a prisoner all the days of your life.”

George Washington

Our founding fathers not only strove for liberty, but also for peace. The 4th of July is a time when we can remember to show kindness to our fellow man. George Washington, the first president of the United States, spoke on this need for peace, saying, “Observe good faith and justice toward all nations. Cultivate peace and harmony with all.”

Wendell Willkie

America is called the “Land of Opportunity” for a reason. Immigrants from all over the world left their countries to make a better life in the United States. Wendell Willkie, the Republican nominee for president in 1940, said, “I believe in America because we have great dreams, and because we have the opportunity to make those dreams come true.”

This July 4th, we should remember that the United States offers us the opportunity to be the best versions of ourselves—and it’s something we should all strive for.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

There’s a lot to love about the United States, which we should especially remember on the 4th of July. Ralph Waldo Emerson was a poet, abolitionist and essayist whose famous works include “Self-Reliance,” “The Over-Soul” and “Nature.” When speaking about the United States, Emerson said, “America means opportunity, freedom, power.”

Dwight D. Eisenhower

Dwight D. Eisenhower served as the 34th president of the United States. During his presidency, Eisenhower signed and sponsored the Civil Rights Bill of 1957, balanced the budget and ended the Korean War. In regards to the 4th of July, Eisenhower said, “Freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions, the spirit of men, and so it must be daily earned and refreshed—else like a flower cut from its life-giving roots, it will wither and die.”

Walt Disney

We can’t forget that July 4th is also about having fun with your friends and family. And who knew more about fun and laughter than Walt Disney himself? Disney is responsible for some of the most famous cartoon characters and animated movies of all time. You’ll also find his name on the world’s best-loved theme parks. “Laughter is America’s most important export,” Disney once said, and we’re sure your holiday will feature much joy and laughter to balance out the serious celebration!

Bob Dylan

The 2016 recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, Bob Dylan is a celebrated singer and songwriter who was cited by the Swedish Academy “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.” As a person who has clearly thought about American ideals throughout his 60-year career, Dylan once said, “I think of a hero as someone who understands the degree of responsibility that comes with his freedom”—an idea many of us will surely keep in mind on Independence Day.
