Never Forget: 20th Anniversary of 9/11
J. C.,
September 11, 2001 is a day that will linger on in the annals of history forever. In many ways, it’s akin to Pearl Harbor: a “day that will live on in infamy.” It’s the day that America was attacked on its own soil, when 2,977 American citizens lost their lives. Countless more have since passed away due to the rippling circumstances of that day.
September 11, 2021 represents two decades since the attack. Even 20 years later, there are many feelings and emotions that come to the surface whenever the anniversary arrives. The reflection that takes place across the nation and around the globe on September 11 is abundant. It’s a day of remembrance, pain, reflection, unity and, in many ways, hope.
Everyone reflects differently on September 11. If you’re wondering how to honor those individuals who lost their lives that day 20 years ago and keep their memories alive, here are some ways to do so.
Watch One of Many Docuseries Programs on 9/11
Marking the 20th anniversary, many television networks will air recently made documentaries about September 11, including the History Channel and National Geographic. The programs provide a firsthand look into what happened on that day in history and the days that followed. Watching these programs provides a way to honor those who lost their lives that day, to truly grasp what happened and how those tragic events unfolded.
Donate to a Local First Responders Organization
On 9/11, 343 firefighters from the New York Fire Department (NYFD) died. In the years that followed, an additional 110+ firefighters died from their injuries caused by the events of September 11. This number is expected to increase due to the health conditions these brave individuals now experience because of their service that day. To honor the memory of these firefighters and all other first responders who gave the ultimate sacrifice, consider donating to a local first responders organization in your area—or one of the national ones.
Plan a Visit to the 9/11 Memorial
Although the 9/11 Memorial and Museum will only be open to families of the 9/11 victims on September 11, you can plan ahead and make a reservation to see the memorial and museum at some time in the future. The 9/11 Memorial and Museum in New York City features exhibits and events, in addition to the impressive memorial structure. It’s a truly powerful memorial that every American should visit at some point in their lives. The site itself holds incredible emotional power, bringing many visitors to tears.

Reflecting on the Patriotism That Resulted from This Tragic Event
History is marked by many tragic events: the hardships of human suffering that bring us closer together and galvanize the qualities that make us strong. If we were to take anything from this event and use it towards a greater good, perhaps the one thing that resonates with most of us is the patriotism that came about as a result of 9/11.
First responders sprang into action with no thought to their own safety and citizens joined together to help one another—both during the event as well as in the days, weeks, months and years that followed. United States citizens expressed their love for this country and their desire to express their patriotism in any way possible.
"We will get through this" and "We are one country" were just a few sentiments expressed as patriotism shone through. Our nation's flag blew proudly in the breeze around every corner throughout the nation, while citizens wore patriotic clothing and expressed patriotic statements. Despite the unfathomable hardship and horror of the September 11 attacks, we came away stronger and more resilient as a country: ready to stand together under the red, white and blue.
