Patriotism is something that many individuals feel on a daily basis. However, this is not the case for the entire population in our country. Perhaps some individuals were at one time patriotic but their feelings faded for one reason or another. On the other hand, maybe patriotism was never a daily part of their life. These days, with a global pandemic raging and economic struggles bearing down on us, it’s important to remember that we’re a nation unified—not divided. Patriotism is a way for us to all come together, despite our differences, and embrace the common ground that makes us Americans.

How Patriotism Differs from Nationalism
While the definitions are similar, there’s a stark difference between patriotism and nationalism. The confusion between these two definitions has led some people to shy away from showing their patriotism, which is why it’s important to understand the difference.
- Patriotism is a devotion to and love for one's country. The word “patriot” comes from the Greek word “patrios,” which means “of one’s father.” The English form of the word arrived in the 16th While patriotism conjures images of those serving in the military, it comes in many forms. Some people might be loyal to our country but not have strong feelings of patriotism. This is something we should all work to change. We need to put patriotism in a favorable light once again. Any citizen can show patriotism by doing their best to show devotion and love to their country.
Why Now is a Great Time to Be Patriotic
As coronavirus concerns grow and recent elections have caused political divide, it's important to hold on to something very special. Patriotism fits within this category. It brings people together, and it’s a common love for the country that many people feel.
Regardless of whether you're an average American citizen or a well-known American lawmaker, being patriotic will work wonders for you. When chaos or conflict ensues, it's important to have something to stand for. Being patriotic allows one to show their devotion to a great country while inspiring others to do the same.
