Recapping the 2021 Ryder Cup

If you’re a fan of golf, you’ve got more than a few events to look forward to throughout the year. Few are as are prestigious and exciting as the Ryder Cup, however. Every two years, the golf world waits in eager anticipation as the Ryder Cup approaches, and the one that took place in 2021 was one to remember.

In 2021, the Ryder Cup took place on Friday, September 24 and ran through Sunday, September 26. The famed golf event took place at Whistling Straits in Sheboygan, WI, playing host to professional golfers from the United States and Europe as they competed to win the Ryder Cup trophy.

Ryder Cup Details

The Ryder Cup began in 1927 and is played every two years. The competition pits a United States team against a European team and the two compete for the coveted Ryder Cup trophy. The golf event changed its format in 1979 and to this day features fourball and foursome matches on both Friday and Saturday, then single matches on Sunday.

The U.S. team uses a points system to determine how golfers make the elite Ryder Cup team. As a result, the six golfers with the highest score make the team. The Ryder Cup captain then selects the remaining six players.

The Ryder Cup location alternates every two years between a golf course in the United States and one in Europe. In 2023, the event is set to unfold in Rome, Italy. The 2021 cup is actually the postponement of the 2020 Ryder Cup, which was put off due to the coronavirus pandemic. Fortunately, the golfers were back at it in 2021, much to the delight of golf aficionados everywhere!

The Outcome of the 2021 Ryder Cup

As mentioned, the 2021 Ryder Cup was one for the ages—not least because it was previously put off due to the coronavirus.

For starters, the United States fielded the youngest Ryder Cup team is history in 2021. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, Team USA absolutely dominated the event, winning the cup back from Europe by a score of 19-9—the largest margin of victory since 1967. Steve Stricker (USA) and Pádraig Harrington (Europe) were captains.

Team USA dominated the match, with only three of its 12 team members posting losing records. Golfers Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay both walked away with 3.5 points apiece in individual matches, followed by Bryson DeChambeau, Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas, who each posted another 2.5 points each. However, Dustin Johnson stole the show, earning an impressive 5 points by himself!

Team Europe faltered on the links, with only two of its 12 members posting individual winning records in matches. Jon Rahm led the team with 3.5 points, followed by Sergio García who posted 3. Every other player earned 1.5 points apiece or fewer, with three members of the team complete shut-out in their individual matches.

After the 2021 Ryder Cup, the overall series stands as 27-14 in favor of the United States. This record goes back to the original cup, played in 1927. There have been 43 Ryder Cup events since then, played by 363 golfers over 1,012 matches.
