The Meaning of Patriotism

There is no denying that America is a powerhouse around the world. When it comes to being a part of this great nation, the meaning of patriotism can vary from person to person. While this is a word that is thrown around so much it almost loses meaning, there are few things to note about patriotism. Let’s take a look at the meaning of patriotism.

When people are asked what makes you an American, the answers are as varied and diverse as our great country in general. However, we think there are a few things that are undeniably patriotic.

1. Voting

One of the most basic ways of defining the meaning of patriotism in today’s world is voting. This country was founded on the notion of a self-governing people at its core and this is still the case today. When you vote, from the local mayoral elections to the presidential election, you are exercising your patriotism in the exact way the Founding Fathers envisioned.

2. Knowledge of Government

Another meaning of patriotism is to make sure you put forth the effort to actually understand what you are voting for beyond the parties of Democrat or Republican. It is important to understand the basic working of how the government operates in regard to Congress and House of Representatives because these are backbones of the system. If you are only voting for the big elections, you are not living up to the true meaning of patriotism.

3. Following Laws

Aside from voting, another way to be patriotic is to follow the laws. Laws are put in place by government officials and voted on by elected officials which means they are laws made by the people. Being a good patriot includes following the rule of law out of respect for fellow citizens and lawmakers.

4. Know the History

Another meaning of patriotism is when you have an understanding of the history of your nation. From the basic of the founding of the country to major events in recent decades which have shaped our nation, having a basic understanding of the history of America helps form a deeper sense of patriotism for most individuals.

5. Passing it On

Finally, one of the best ways to act as a patriotism of this great nation is to pass it on. When children grow up with parents who vote and encourage their children to take an interest in such matters, it repeats the cycle with their children someday. The more you pass it on to your children, the better informed and more patriotic the future generations will be!
