September's Patriot Highlight is Arline Covey (formerly Edie), who was a nurse in the United States Army. Mrs. Covey turned 103 years old last week and she's known as Granny to all of her family. She has 5 kids, 10 grand kids and 21 great-grand kids! In 1937, she boarded a train to Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Illinois to attend Nursing School. This would later prepare her for joining the Army Nursing Corps. She joined the Army Nursing Corps in 1940. By March of 1941, she was sent to the U.S. Army Air Corps Chanute Field in Rantoul, Illinois: a training base for young Army pilots. Meet this month's Patriot Highlight, Lionel Nicholas, who served in both the United States Army and Navy. Lionel completed JROTC at 17 years old, and went on to join the Army right out of high school. He served for four years there as a cook. After the Army, he joined the Navy for four more years during the Cuban Missile Crisis and was near the equator during the conflict. He loved traveling all over the world on the Navy ships, and has some wild stories to tell. His favorite one to share about his time on the ship is about swimming in the ocean, surrounding by sharks! Hector Espinola is a 96 year old WWII Veteran, who joined the Army at just eighteen years old. He completed his training at Fort MacArthur in San Pedro, CA and served as a gunner of a 105mm Howitzer Cannon in the Philippines. He was in Japan for their occupation after their surrender in 1945. Hector lives in Costa Mesa, CA with his wife Elena of 56 years. They have 4 children, 14 grand children, and 2 great-grand children. He has only recently started to share to his WWII experiences with people outside of his family. This month's Patriot Highlight is Alan St. Louis, pictured above in his Flag Shirt gear. Alan holds the World Record for singing the Most National Anthems in One Year with 500 performances! He shares he is on track to sing his 5,000th Star-Spangled Banner performance on August 7th! Alan has been singing the Anthem his whole life! In 2001 he started auditioning to sing the anthem for the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. After not getting a reply in 2010, he called them directly to find out why. Their answer: 'We don't know you, get your name out there!" So, Alan started singing for local sports teams. One time he sang the anthem at 8 games in 9 days....
This month's Patriot Highlight is Alvin Stasney. Alvin's daughter, Rebecca, shares with us the story of her dad. Alvin was a WWII Veteran and Proud American. In 1943, Alvin joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II as a navigator of a B-24 in the 392nd Bomber Unit stationed in Wendling, England. He flew 30 missions over Europe and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. After the war, Alvin returned to Crosby, Texas where he built a dry-cleaning business and purchased a Mobil Oil bulk distributorship that delivered fuel to area farmers and businesses.
